A Customer Is Down
Unfortuantely, one of our customers needed a spindle rebuild on an older lathe. The machine was part of a production cell. As with mechanical moving parts, the spindle went out. The customer had a deadline from their buyer, and they needed their machine fixed. The customer called Hartwig, Inc. and we dispatched a Service Engineer who diagnosed the problem. To get the ball rolling, the service engineer called their local parts department, and ordered everything they would need to perform the rebuild, and then he began pulling the spindle.

Hartwig, Inc. Got the Parts
Our first response was to contact the OEM machine builder to order all of the necessary parts. We found that the OEM did not have all of the parts in stock. Hartwig, Inc. uses a state of the art fully integrated accounting system, to track inventories through our Midwestern offices. The parts coordinator looked in all of the available warehouses and found everything we needed to complete the job. In a spindle rebuild there is a wide variety of parts required including collars, O-rings, bearings, and labyrinths. With a few clicks of a mouse, we had all of those parts shipped overnight to one facility. When the service engineer walked in the next morning, all of the necessary parts were waiting for him, and he began the rebuild process.

Up & Running
With no lost time, the service engineer went to work. To properly rebuild a spindle, we needed to grind the labyrinths to correct tolerances giving the spindle a perfect fit. Through one of our customers, we had the labyrinths ground to exact standards over lunch, and the spindle rebuild was done by the end of the day. First thing the next morning, the service engineer and the spindle were back at the customer's shop ready for re-installation in the machine.
