Our History

Since 1960, Hartwig has been a machine tool distributor known for superior service and support as well as our integrity. With over 12,500 machine installations, we have combined high-quality equipment with applications expertise and support to help our customers meet and exceed their manufacturing goals.
1960
The Beginning
Paul Hartwig, a tool & die maker by trade, and his wife Juanita purchased the Lou Slager Company in St. Louis, MO. Together they founded Hartwig, Inc. with a total of three employees.
1975
Gary Joins
Paul and Juanita's son, Gary Hartwig, joins the family business.
1986
Western Expansion
Hartwig expands; Western Missouri office opens in Kansas City, MO.
1988
Number 1,000
Hartwig hits a big milestone with its 1,000th CNC machine tool installation.
1989
Second Generation Takes the Helm
Gary Hartwig succeeds Paul Hartwig as President and the family tradition of innovation and superior service continues.
1991
Hartwig Expands
Wichita, Kansas office opens to support the manufacturing needs in the aerospace capital and beyond.
1998
Number 5,000
CNC machine installations by Hartiwg hit the 5,000 mark.
1999
Coverage Expands
Hartwig opens a sales and support office in Broken Arrow, OK.
2004
Northern Texas Acquisition
Hartwig increases territory sales and support in Northern Texas with the acquisition of P.D. Browne Machine Tools in the Dallas metro area.
2005
Midwest Industrial Tool Purchase
Hartwig broadens expansion coverage with the purchase of Midwest Industrial Tool. Settling in Aurora, CO, Hartwig supports customers in not only Colorado, but Montana, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming.
2008
Number 10000
Hartwig reaches 10,000th installation of CNC machines.
2008
Okuma Tech Center
Houston Technology Center launched in conjunction with Okuma; featuring a state-of-the-art showroom for Okuma and many other industry-leading brands within the industry.
2013
The Third Generation Takes the Helm
Geoff Hartwig, son of Gary Hartwig, is appointed President and CEO Greg Hartwig, son of Gary Hartwig, is appointed Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Gary Hartwig becomes Chairman of the Board.
2013
Seth Machlus is promoted to Vice President of Operations and Linda Ehler to Chief Financial Officer.
2014
HIT Expands
The Hartwig Engineering Services Team (HIT) expands to strengthen resources and focus on further supporting customers with turnkey and manufacturing cell and design needs.
2017
Hartwig partners with Denver, CO's Metropolitan State University (MSU). Hartwig donated over $2 million dollars in CNC machine tool equipment to the Aerospace and Engineering Sciences Building; college students will have the opportunity to create, design, and operate aerospace components that are used throughout the world.
